Playing on Purpose
Write the sentence: "The cat was playing". Then, craft at least 10 additional sentences building on each one by adding more descriptive words. This activity was inspired by an ALS student.
This assignment was one of the first to be given in the introductory week of this course. It was a great way of getting our writing chops flowing for the rest of the eight weeks. Composing this was both amusing and rehearsal, getting me into the grove of writing as description is essential to everything we author. May you walk away inspired from this example.
The cat was playing….
There was a fragrant smell in the air as the brown fluffy cat was playing in the field only minutes before dawn. She was on her way to the old dilapidated church; the one through the grassy field, passed the plum trees, and over the old broken bridge. As the decrepit church grew nearer, a small butterfly began to fly in uniform circles around the kittens head. Not wasting time, she took giant kitten like leaps into the air to combat her tiny nemesis. Just a few purrs, two teeny twirls in the air, and a roll on the dandelions and the butterfly was conquered. As she approached her destination, she stopped to play with a plum that had ripened to maturity as if it were a ball of yearn. Now passed the plum trees, the kitten stepped with prideful paws over what was left of an old white creek bridge. Once the kitten was in full view of the church she slowed her stride and entered from the broken side door. After relaxing herself onto a wooden pew, her eyes gazed into the sky as the sun rose over the countryside. The back wall of the church was no longer standing and you could see as far as the eye could stretch across the terrain. The crunch of footsteps in the grass, and the shadow of a frail person approached the church. An old man appeared with a basket and fishing rod. He whistled long and gently and the kitten leaped from her pew and jumped into the man’s basket. They went off together as the man hummed an old hymnal and the kitten anticipated the rest of her day.
